Round one is over for another year and the second day of Wimbledon provided a lot of hustle and bustle, so let us break it down for you. For full match results vist http://volleta.tennis/tournament/the-championships-wimbledon/
World number one Angelique Kerber managed to shake off her recent disappointment at the French Open with a straight sets victory over injury riddled Irana Falconi; though it wasn’t as easy as the 6-4 6-4 scoreline suggested. Grass-court specialist Coco Vandeweghe also seemed a bit rusty initially in her win over Mona Barthel. She eventually found her feet after a series of consecutive breaks in the first set and won 7-5 6-2.
We were witnesses to a tense affair late on centre court, when former world number one Caroline Wozniacki was pushed all the way by Hungary’s Timea Babos but survives to face 2010 semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova. Several seeds didn’t fare as well however, with Kiki Betens (23), Lauren Davis (28), Shuai Zhang, Daria Gavrilova (20) and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (16) all falling at the first hurdle.
The only retirement of the first round came from sixteen-year-old Anastasia Potapova who was; sadly, in her first Wimbledon forced to retire in the second set against Tatjana Maria.
We look ahead to the second-round tomorrow where we highly anticipate big names such as Johanna Konta, Venus Williams, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Madison Keys and much more!
