Clash on Ashe – US Open Women’s Single Final

Saturday 10th September and we’re on the verge of finishing 2016’s final slam. Serena Williams is out and more importantly her 186 week stint as the world’s best (current) female tennis player is over for now. Karolina Plisokova’s emphatic victory over Serena has awarded tonight’s opponent the honour of world number one. She must now try her hardest not to award Angelique Kerber the trophy too.

Angelique Kerber

Reasons she will win –

  • Grand slam winner this year Australian Open the only other hard court slam
  • Confidence after being crowned number one regardless of result
  • The more experienced of the two, should give her a slight edge

Reasons she Might Lose–

  • Record in finals isn’t particularly great
  • History of being usurped by lower ranked opponents
  • Mixed form this year, not consistent enough

Karolina Pliskova

Reasons she will win-

  • Confidence stemming from defeating Williams
  • Won two titles this year including a Premier 5 on hard court against none other than Angie Kerber
  • Playing the best tennis of her career so far

Reasons she might lose-

  • Never been past the third round of a slam before now, experience could be daunting plus will body and mind hold up after 2 weeks?
  • If serve is not firing on all cylinders the match could run away from her quickly
  • Somewhat of a grass court specialist, is she out of her depth in this final?
Year Tournament Round Surface Winner Score
2016 Cincinnati Final Hard Pliskova 6-3 6-1
2015 Stanford Final Hard Kerber 6-3 5-7 6-4
2015 Birmingham Final Grass Kerber 6-7 6-3 6-4
2015 Sydney Semi-Final Hard Pliskova 6-3 6-2
2014 Nuremberg Semi-Final Clay Pliskova 7-6 6-4
2014 Doha R32 Hard Kerber 7-6 6-4
2011 Copenhagen R32 Hard Kerber 6-2 6-2

The head to head doesn’t exactly point us towards a winner, though the most recent meeting just over two weeks ago is huge! Pliskova tore Kerber apart and this will be in both players’ minds going in to tonight’s final. Even with this, we’d have to put our money on Kerber collecting her second slam but there’s every chance it could go down to the wire. Who do you think will lift the trophy in the big apple?
